Killing Castro: Plots that Failed
Knowing Castro loved to smoke, a plot was hatched to get into Castro’s private stash of Cuban cigars and dose them with toxins. (There is debate over whether this was intended to kill him, or just make his beard fall out.) A secondary plot was considered that would dose him with hallucinogens, causing the leader to embarrass himself in public. These plots were not carried out, quite likely due to the difficulties inherent in getting at his private stash. Above: Castro cheered by a crowd on his victorious march to Havana, 1959.
